How do your customs declarations compare with the median importer?

Six questions, about two minutes. Each answer is placed against the median importer in BorderAudit's analysis of 1.56 million customs declarations made for 30 UK importers from Mar 2021 to Sep 2026. The medians come from our report, Who Makes UK Importers' Customs Declarations?.

Nothing you enter leaves your browser. We count only that the benchmark was started and finished, never your answers. Rough figures are fine: every answer is compared only with the published median importer, middle half and counts.

Worth reading back in your own data

Answer any of the questions above and the list builds here.

This compares rough figures with published medians. It is not advice and it does not assess your declarations. The goods have to meet the agreement's rules of origin, and the importer needs proof of origin. A line like this is worth checking; whether it was an overpayment depends on that check.

Where the medians come from

Every median and count on this page comes from our report on who makes UK importers' customs declarations: 1.56 million declarations and 2.4 million declaration lines from 30 UK importers, made from Mar 2021 to Sep 2026 and analysed in October 2026. The importers chose to have their declarations analysed, and businesses that do so are more likely to suspect a problem. Read every figure as describing the declarations we analysed, not UK imports as a whole. How the figures are derived is set out in the methodology.

Questions

Does BorderAudit see my answers?

No. The benchmark runs in your browser and your answers are never sent anywhere. We count only that the benchmark was started and finished.

Where do the medians come from?

From BorderAudit's analysis of the customs declarations of 30 UK importers that shared their HMRC declaration data with us. The importers chose to have their declarations analysed, so the figures describe those declarations, not UK imports as a whole.

Is the result advice?

No. It places rough figures beside published medians. It does not assess your declarations or say what you should do.

How do I get my own figures?

Every UK importer can get its own declaration data from HMRC, and with it see who declared what and which procedures and preferences were used.
