Relation, authorisation and sequence errorsRelation & missing element

CDS12077Relation Error: A valid value must be supplied in Data Element 2 as Data Element 1 is present

HMRC explanation

Relation error affecting one or more additional completion requirements

For example, the completion of one DE with a certain value/code requires another value/code to be entered in the same DE or a different DE (such as not entering 00100 in DE 2/2 when ABDIN is entered in DE 2/2 etc), or; the DE itself has not been fully completed/populated as required (such as an address not fully completed when a name is provided in DE 7/14 etc). or; the DE has been completed incorrectly, for example DE 4/4 measurement units KTC or CTG cannot have zero values.

What this means

Completing one data element with a particular value requires another value, in the same element or a different one, and that second value is missing or incomplete.

What to check for CDS12077

  • Every element that depends on the one you completed.
  • Whether a related element has been completed in full; HMRC's examples include an incomplete address where a party name has been given.
  • Whether a code entered in one element requires a further code alongside it.

What to check across the Relation, authorisation and sequence errors

Two elements, or a value and a rule, disagree. Read both elements together: completing one element with a particular code often requires another value, and the fault is frequently in the element you did not change. The family also covers parties and authorisations that are not recognised, references that must be unique, and messages sent out of sequence.

FAQ
What does CDS12077 mean?

CDS12077 is a relation error: because one data element is present, another must carry a valid value, and it does not. HMRC's examples include an incomplete address where a party name has been given. Check every element that depends on the one you completed, including elements elsewhere on the declaration.
